Northern Water Recognized for Assistance During Alexander Mountain Fire
Northern Water has been honored for its efforts during the Alexander Mountain Fire in summer 2024. The Larimer County Emergency Operations Center Collaboration Award was given in December to Northern Water for its efforts across many departments to aid in fighting the fire and recover from the damage it caused.
When the fire was reported on July 29, 2024, it was burning in an area west of the Hansen Feeder Canal, which delivers water from the Colorado-Big Thompson Project to Horsetooth Reservoir. As the fire initially spread, the canal provided containment. When the fire later turned to the northwest, Northern Water and its contractor Fortress were able to place sediment retention barriers along the Hansen Feeder Canal to mitigate possible impacts from future storms.
Employees from the four divisions of Northern Water, including Environmental Services, Operations, Engineering, and Finance and Administration were able to offer their expertise to help the effort to contain and control the fire, and implement post-fire mitigation strategies.
