Progress Made at Chimney Hollow Despite Weather Closures in January
Winter finally arrived at Chimney Hollow bringing with it snow, wind and cold that forced five weather related “no work” days in January at the construction site. Despite a few closure days to keep crews safe, progress is being made on the construction of Chimney Hollow Reservoir and its supporting components.
In February, two major components of the overall project started. The first is initial placement of the Chimney Hollow main dam plinth concrete, which provides a “watertight” connection between the asphalt core and the dam foundation.
The second component underway is the installation of a bridge over the Flatiron Penstocks. The Flatiron Penstocks are a key piece of the Colorado Big Thompson Project that delivers all the water from the West Slope of Colorado to our East Slope distribution systems. The bridge will lead to the future public parking lot at Chimney Hollow for recreation that will be managed by Larimer County.
