Employee Spotlight: Mike Fiscus

When Mike Fiscus began working for Northern Water in 1984, his role as an operations and maintenance fieldman kept him busy maintaining the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. Now, 38 years later with his pending retirement at the end of November, Fiscus said his recent work at Chimney Hollow Reservoir has been the largest and most important project of his career.

Since construction began on Chimney Hollow Reservoir in August 2021, Fiscus has spent his days on site inspecting various components of the project, including the main dam and concrete plinth, as well as the bridge over the Flatiron Penstocks, which is now complete.

During his time at Northern Water, Fiscus has seen many projects take off. Not long after he began work, his transfer to the Engineering Division led to a variety of different roles, including helping to design, survey and build various pieces of infrastructure. He has had a hand in many projects including several pump plants, hydropower plants, the Southern Water Supply Project I and II pipelines, as well as the Pleasant Valley Pipeline. Early in his tenure, with the recent completion of the Windy Gap Project, Fiscus helped establish several water measurement gauging stations and a West Slope precipitation enhancement program.

Helping construct the Granby Hydropower Plant in 2015 is one of Fiscus’ most memorable projects. While it is a relatively small hydro facility, Granby Hydro plays a major role as part of C-BT Project's West Slope infrastructure.

“Through all the projects I’ve worked on, we have continued to remain focused on our mission and that’s to deliver water,” Fiscus said.

Fiscus has experienced a lot during his 38 years at Northern Water, but nothing compares to the size of the current Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project. In retirement Fiscus plans to make more time for hunting, fishing and family, but he’s equally excited to see that first water come into this new reservoir.
