About Us

Committed to Delivering Water to Northeastern Colorado While Continuing to Plan for Future Water Needs for Our Growing Region

Since 1937, Northern Water has built a solid reputation of planning for and developing water supplies to approximately 1,021,000 people throughout our boundaries. We were created to contract with the federal government to build the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, and today we continue on our early mission of collecting water west of the Continental Divide and delivering it to Northeastern Colorado for agricultural, municipal, domestic, industrial and environmental uses. We expanded our water portfolio when Northern Water’s Municipal Subdistrict was formed in 1970 by six municipalities to build and operate the Windy Gap Project.

As population continues to boom in our service area, we’re continuing to plan for future water storage projects to meet the growing demands with two new projects planned – the Northern Integrated Supply Project and Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project. While our water projects keep our staff busy in day-to-day operations and future plans, Northern Water provides even more through monitoring weather and water quality data, tracking streamflows and reservoir levels, and providing water planning and efficiency information.
